New BTEC Level 2 ICT Qualifications

We’ve recently seen announced two new BTEC Level 2 ICT qualifications that will start first teaching in September 2017.

These are the BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Information Technology and the BTEC Level 2 Technicals in Digital Technology.

Given the new BTEC First in Information & Creative Technology has only been taught for a few years now, this might cause some concern over having to change qualification again. However, the BTEC First registration date has been extended until 2019, which  means this offers a lot of flexibility for teachers.

So what do these new qualifications offer us? Should we switch right away, or wait until we need to switch? To help you, I’ve summarised some of the key information on these new qualifications.

BTEC Tech Award in Information Technology

This qualification is simultaneously assessed at level 1 & level 2 and only has a single option worth 1 GCSE (120 GLH).

The first registration and first teaching date for the course is September 2017 and first assessment date is Spring 2019 (so don’t start teaching it September 2017 if you want to deliver it in 1 year).

The BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award Units

The qualification is broken down into three units, one of which is assessed externally via a traditional written exam, and the other two internally. All units must be passed at at least level 1. These units are:

  • Exploring Uses of Information Technology
  • Developing a Spreadsheet Solution to Model Data
  • Creating an Interactive Product

Externally Assessed BTEC Units

Component 1: Exploring Uses of IT is the externally examined unit from the qualification. The exam can be taken February & May/June of each year from 2019 onwards and will be worth 40% of the students overall grade in the qualification.

The external assessment will come in the form of a short answer written exam paper. Their will be a total of 60 marks available and students will be given 75 minutes to complete the exam.

Students can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade at either Level 1 & Level 2 from this test.

Of course KnowItAll Ninja will provide a revision course for this unit to help your students prepare and get the best mark possible in their BTEC Tech Awards in IT qualification.

Internally Assessed BTEC Units

Component 2: Develop a Spreadsheet Solution to Model Data and Component 3: Creating an Interactive Product are both assessed through traditional BTEC internally assessed coursework.

Students can achieve a Pass or Merit grade at Level 1 or a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade at Level 2.

BTEC Level 2 Technicals in Digital Technology

This is a much larger suite of BTEC Level 2 ICT qualifications. The qualification offers three pathways to students:

  • Data Management
  • Digital Applications
  • Networking & Cybersecurity

Unlike the BTEC Level 2 Tech Awards, these qualifications are focused more closely on work-based skills. The goal of the qualification is to prepare students for apprenticeships rather than a route to level 3 study (though this can lead to further BTEC Level 3 studies).

They’re also designed only for post-16 students and all versions of this qualification are equivalent to 3 GCSE’s (360 GLH).

The BTEC Level 2 Technicals Units

Unlike most previous BTEC qualifications of this size, there are no optional units. Every unit is mandatory. There are six units to each pathway, four of which are common to all three pathways (a little strange given how different in topic each path is).

The four common units are:

  • Set Up and Configure Technology Systems
  • Current and Emerging Technologies
  • Security Protection and Risk Management
  • IT Service Solutions

As mentioned, the final 2 units depend on your pathway. So, Pathway 1 will see units on Database Tools & Techniques and Organisational Data Systems. Pathway 2 will see units on Digital Application Development and Organisational Uses for Digital Media Systems. Finally, Pathway 3 will see see units on Network Technologies & Applications and Installing & Maintaining Networks.

Most units will be assessed through the traditional BTEC internally assessed assignment. However, Unit 3: Security Protection and Risk Management will be assessed through an external on-screen test. Also, Unit 5: IT Service Solutions will be assessed through an externally assessed task.

The External Assessments

Both external assessments can be taken as early as January 2018 and students will be allowed one resit. The onscreen test is available on-demand, while the task will have four opportunities in the year on a quarterly basis.

The on-screen test will consist of a mixture of multiple-choice and short answer questions (the same as the current BTEC First I&CT qualification). The exam will have 60 marks and students will have 75 minutes to complete it.

The externally assessed task is a practical activity completed in controlled conditions. The task will have 45 marks and students will have 3.5 hours to complete it in.

Again, KnowItAll Ninja will provide a revision course for this unit to help your students prepare and get the best mark possible in their BTEC Level 2 Technicals in Digital Technology qualification.

So Which Qualification to Choose?

Well, obviously you don’t need to right now. The older BTEC First in Information & Creative Technology will be running for at least a couple more years.

However, planning for the future, if your a school then you will be moving towards the BTEC Tech Award in Information Technology. If you currently deliver a 2 GCSE version this will be a problem as there is no 2 GCSE version. You’ll need to hope for a replacement for the traditional BTEC First I&CT.

College’s will likely deliver the BTEC Technicals in Digital Technology. This is due to it being the 3 GCSE option. Again, whether this will be a replacement for the old BTEC First ICT or an alternative, is unclear. Certainly it is a very different course indeed.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out on KnowItAll Ninja if you’re planning to deliver any of these courses. I’ll be developing them for the externally assessed unit and you’ll have presentations, videos & quizzes to help your students succeed.

You can check out our courses for Unit 1 The Online World and Unit 2 Technology Systems right now. Subscribe your students for the year for just £2 per student.

BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker

After listening to the feedback from the teacher’s using KnowItAll Ninja to deliver the BTEC ICT Level 2, we have responded and brought the most requested new feature, our student tracker.

You can now easily monitor your students progress in both Unit 1 The Online World and Unit 2 Technology Systems to ensure that they are completing the lessons as you expect them to.

You can even split your students into groups to make monitoring their progress even easier.

To help you get to grips with how this new feature works we’ve created this simple guide.

Using the BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker

Upon logging in to KnowItAll Ninja, you should find a link to the student tracker in your user menu. Click on this link and you’ll go straight there.

The first screen you’ll see will list the groups that you have been assigned to as admin. These groups are created upon subscribing to your website, and you can manage students being assigned to each group through your user area (again a link can be found in the user menu).

BTEC Level 2 ICT Student Tracker - Groups
Fig. 1: BTEC Level 2 ICT Student Tracker – Groups

If you do not see any groups, or some of your groups are missing, or perhaps you would like to add additional groups, then you can contact me directly and the changes can be quickly made.

Once you have chosen the groups you wish to view the progress of you will then be greeted with the following screen.

BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker - Students View of The Online World
Fig. 2: BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker – Students View of The Online World

This shows when each of your students were last active in the Unit 1 The Online World unit, as well as their current progress and the status in that unit’s course.

The menu on the top left of the screen can allow you to switch this to view student progress in Unit 2 Technology Systems, or instead to view the progress of all students in each lesson of the unit’s course. This can be seen below:

BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker - Lessons View of The Online World
Fig. 3: BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker – Lessons View of The Online World

Here you can easily see the module each Unit 1 The Online World lesson belongs to, the number of students that have completed that lesson with 100% and the average grade of the students who have attempted the lesson.

From here you can navigate further into the BTEC ICT Level 2 student tracker in order to gain more detailed information on how students are progressing.

For example, if while in the student view we saw in screenshot 2 of this guide, you clicked on a students name, you would be greeted with the following screen.

BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker - Single Student View of The Online World
Fig. 4: BTEC ICT Level 2 Student Tracker – Single Student View of The Online World

As you can see, this now shows exactly how a single student is progressing in Unit 1 The Online World (obviously you can view this for Unit 2 Technology Systems as well).

It shows when the student first attempted each lesson’s quiz, when they made their most recent attempt (assuming they didn’t pass at the first attempt), the lesson status and the grade they achieved in the quiz.

From this screen, or from the lesson view we say in screenshot 3 of this guide, you can also select an individual lesson to view more detail on it. This will present you with the following screen.

BTEC Level 2 ICT Student Tracker - Single Lesson View of The Online World
Fig. 5: BTEC Level 2 ICT Student Tracker – Single Lesson View of The Online World

This will show you the date each student first attempted that lesson’s quiz (Online Services 1), the latest attempt they made at it, their status in that lesson and their grade.

As you can see the KnowItAll Ninja BTEC ICT Level 2 student tracker is an exceptionally useful tool for monitoring your students progress in their studies for their online exams.

It’s also really easy to use and navigate. You can even get back to whatever area of the tracker you want using the simple breadcrumb trail you can see on the top right of each screenshot.

If you’d like anymore guidance on using it though, or any more information on anything at all about the site, then please contact me.

Developing Our BTEC Level 2 ICT Resources

This year has been a really excellent year for KnowItAll Ninja. Thousands of students from hundreds of schools have signed up to use our gamified elearning BTEC Level 2 ICT resources to study for their Unit 1 The Online World and Unit 2 Technology Systems online tests.

I’ve received some fabulous feedback from teachers across the UK about how much they love using the site and how it has benefited their students. For example:

Congratulations on an excellent and valuable resource. As an ICT/Computing teacher for both level 3 and level 2 courses, this website has delivered exactly what is needed (and is desperately missing) from the examination board’s support services.

– Philip Golding – Bexhill 6th Form College

However this is just the start for KnowItAll Ninja and I’m working on expanding our already excellent resources for Unit 1 The Online World and Unit 2 Technology Systems.

Improving our BTEC Level 2 ICT Resources

You’ve probably already seen the new videos that have been getting added to Unit 1 The Online World over the past couple of months. These will continue to be added until each lesson in both Unit 1 Online World and Unit 2 Technology Systems have their own dedicated explainer video.

You will notice also that in the past few weeks all of the text based content from each of the BTEC Level 2 ICT lessons have been updated. This is to make the lessons even more accessible, and ensure coverage of the specification is comprehensive.

I’m confident you won’t find better coverage of the externally assessed units anywhere else.

Just this week the brand new student tracker system has been added to KnowItAll Ninja too. This will allow teachers to monitor their students progress in all of the lessons so that they can be sure the students are understanding the content being taught and are completing their tasks.

We’ll be adding a new blog post all about the new students tracker very soon so you can see exactly how it works.

Of course, KnowItAll Ninja isn’t going to be just about the BTEC First ICT qualification. I’m working on adding a number of new courses to cover topics such as BTEC Level 3 ICT & Computing. I’ll also be adding courses on the new BTEC Tech Awards and Tech Certs that are being developed by Pearson and I’ve been asked to work on the books for. Other non-ICT subjects will certainly be added soon too.

Subscribing to our BTEC Level 2 ICT Resources

One final change you’ll see to KnowItAll Ninja is that the site is a paid subscription site. For most of last year school’s could access KnowItAll Ninja completely for free.

The goal was to see if the site could run on it’s own using advertising to cover the costs of running the site, but it is clear that advertising was not working for the site. After speaking to several teachers that are using the site, I came up with a payment model that I felt would help keep the site running but make it very affordable for school’s.

So to keep the site alive, KnowItAll Ninja will require school’s to take out a subscription in order to access it’s gamified BTEC Level 2 ICT resources. This is at a very low cost of £2 per student per year and is completely flexible. If you aren’t satisfied you can even get a full refund within the first 14-days so there is no risk involved. I’m sure it won’t be needed though.

We’ll look more into the subscription reasoning and process in a future post. However, if you’d like some information now then you should check out the subscription page right now.

If you have any questions then don’t be afraid to contact me, I’m happy to answer any and all questions and help you in anyway I can.
